Práce s texty písní
Původně jsem plánoval udělat drobný průzkum zájmu před tím, než tuhle stránku vytvořím, ale pak jsem si řekl "Why would I bother?" a vytvořil jsem ji stejně. Nejdříve pár slov k tomu, proč vůbec vznikla. Chtěl bych se zde věnovat dle mého soudu poměrně populárnímu tématu ve výuce angličtiny, a tím je práce
s písňovými texty.
Rozhodně nechci smysl písňových textů v hodinách angličtiny shazovat. Jedná se jistě o šlechetný úmysl zpestřit studentům výuku - a někdy je to to jediné, na co se studenti občas i těší.
Při výběru vhodné písně je ale potřeba si položit minimálně jednu důležitou otázku: Může tento text něčím obohatit angličtinu studentů, nebo se v něm pořád dokola opakují tytéž primitivní fráze? Jinými slovy, při výběru písně musíte být velmi obezřetní, aby výrazy, fráze apod., které jsou v textu obsažené, vašim studentům k něčemu byly, a aby se práce s texty nestala jen jakousi "ulejvárnou".
Postupně uvedu příklady textů, které obsahují užitečné fráze, a pokud se jim bude věnovat patřičná pozornost, angličtině vašich studentů určitě prospějí. A nemám na mysli písně typu "Let it Be", "Here comes the Sun", "Lemon Tree" a podobné, jež sice mohou být krásné, poetické a všechno okolo, ale jazykově hodnotných pasáží v nich mnoho nenajdete.
Níže uvedené texty se zde budou objevovat ve dvou variantách:
a) kompletní text se zvýrazněnými pasážemi hodnými pozornosti, s pokusem o vysvětlení, proč se zrovna ony dočkaly zvýraznění
b) doplňovačka, kterou studenti doplňují při poslechu písně (pochopitelně je lepší nevolit videa s textem, ale třeba klasické mp3 verze, stažitelné kdekoliv)

ain't - poměrně zajímavé, multifunkční, hovorové slovíčko, schopné zastupovat přítomné zápory sloves BE (you ain't = you aren't; he ain't = he isn't...) a HAVE (you ain't got = you haven't got...)
the broken-hearted - určitý člen se takto používá, když mluvíme o skupině lidí (the young - mladí, the rich - bohatí, the broken-hearted - ti se zlomeným srdcem)
gonna - je dobré znát tři základní hovorové zkratky: GONNA = BE GOING TO, WANNA = WANT TO, GOTTA = HAVE GOT TO, tedy "mít v úmyslu", "chtít" a "muset"
out loud - nahlas (ať to všichni slyší)
alive - pokud patříte k těm, kterým tato přídavná jména na "a" připadají zvláštní, ani se vám nedivím, nicméně je dobré znát alespoň dvě tato příd.jména: ALIVE = NAŽIVU a ASLEEP = SPÍCÍ
I did it my way - po svém; sami si položte otázku, zda byste takto byli schopni česou větu přeložit, hádám, že většinou byste řekli "I did it how I wanted", což odpovídá zhruba tak angličtině zvláštní školy, "I did it the way I wanted" už by bylo lepší
this is for the ones who stood their ground - 1) bez znalosti využití zástupného zájmena ONE / ONES nejde dost dobře v angličtině dlouhodobě fungovat, do češtiny se často překládá pouze pomocí tvarů ukazovacího zájmena TO (this is for the ones who... = to je pro ty, co...; Would you like to buy this brown jacket? No, I'd prefer the black one = ...to černé). 2) stand one's ground = vydržet, stát si za svým, nevzdat se
back down - poměrně užitečné frázové sloveso znamenající "ustoupit, stáhnout se" (před nepříznivými okolnostmi, šikanou apod.)
tomorrow's getting harder, make no mistake - 1) GET je základní sloveso pro změnu stavu, konkrétně v této větě by vás možná svádělo použít "start to be" (protože "začne to být ještě těžší"), což nedělejte. Zásadně. Namísto něho používejte právě sloveso GET. 2) make no mistake - abys věděl, aby sis nemyslel, aby bylo jasno
got to make your own breaks - zde nám samozřejmě chybí podmět (you), což je pro hovorovou angličtinu velmi příznačné + tvar got to (viz výše zkratku GOTTA), celá věta znamená něco ve smyslu "musíte se o své štěstí sami přičinit, nemůžete spoléhat, že přijde samo"
better stand tall - 1) ono BETTER je zde zkrácená vazba HAD BETTER, které vyjadřuje české RADŠI ve významu "radši to udělej, jinak by mohlo být zle", a odlišuje se od WOULD RATHER - "radší bych teď dělal tohle, než to, co teď dělám" (porovnejte: I'd better leave so that mum doesn't worry about me - radši vypadnu, ať se nebojí, a ať třeba není průšvih X I'd rather you helped me - byl bych radši, kdybys mi pomohl, všimněte si minulého tvaru slovesa, ten je zde proto,že věta má dva podměty), 2) stand tall - věřit si, nebát se

used to do sth. - užitečný a potřebný způsob vyjádření toho, že jste v minulosti něco běžně dělali, v současnosti však s největší pravděpodobností už nikoli (he used to read especially books about history; there used to be a school here), otázky a zápory se tvoří pomocí DID, přičemž je zde možnost ponechat i po DID tvar USED v minulém čase, tato vazba se totiž řadí mezi modální slovesa
I didn't use(d) to play computer games when I was a kid Did they use(d) to visit you more often?

be on strike - stávkovat
he's down on his luck - nedaří se mu, nemá moc štěstí
tough - poměrně užitečné slůvko znamenající TVRDÝ, DRSNÝ a to jak doslova (povrch na kurtu), tak přeneseně (drsně vypadající člověk, drsná životní situace...)
Gina works the diner all day - 1) všimněte si vynechání předložky, nutno podotknout, že se jedná o hovorovou angličtinu, u zkoušek a podobných věcí by ji bylo vhodné uvést; 2) diner - malá restaurace, bufet (pozor - uprostřed ve výslovnosti /aj/, nikoli /i/ jako u "dinner"); 3) all day - nenápadné a podceňované spojení, kterým překládejte nejen české "celý den", ale i "od rána do večera" (from morning to evening)
pay - plat, výplata (až svůdně jednoduché, předpokládám, že mnohé z vás by tento překlad nenapadl), též paycheck
hold on to sth. - zde je potřeba říci, že v češtině je rozdíl "držet něco" a "držet se něčeho" (držet můžete tašku s nákupem, držet se můžete třeba zábradlí), což angličtina reflektuje, a právě druhému zmíněnému odpovídá naše fráze hold on to, jejímž opakem - tedy pustit něco - je let go of (pouze s jedním F, boggles the mind, člověk by spíš čekal dvě)
make a difference - těžko přeložitelné spojení, zde bychom ho mohli vyjádřit jako "nic to nezmění", "nic zásadního se nestane" apod.
if we make it or not - slovesa DO a MAKE můžeme obě využít ve významu "zvládneme to", "dáme to" apod.
give it a shot - zkusit to, prumbnout to (velmi užitečné hovorové spojení s variantou "give it a try")
half way / halfway - v půli něčeho, užitečná konstrukce především s předložkou THROUGH (I'm halfway through the book - mám za sebou polovinu té knížky; halfway through the task, I realized that I was falling behind - v půlce úkolu jsem si uvědomil, že nestíhám)
live on a prayer - žít v naději, že se situace zlepší
in hock - v zastavárně
make it talk - zde mi nejde ani tak o význam vzhledem k písni, ale o gramatiku, ta je zde totiž klíčová. Po slovesech LET a MAKE se používá pouze holý infinitiv slovesa, tzn. bez částice -to.
Let me pay this time - Víš co, já teďka zaplatím (nikoli Let me to pay)
Why don't you let her deal with it her way? - Co kdybys ji nechal, ať si to vyřeší sama?
Make it stop - Zastavte to!
Don't make me do it! - Nenuťte mě to dělat!
Gina dreams of running away - tady se dostáváme k jedné z nejdůležitějších pouček, které nám může angličtina nabídnout, a sice, že pokud po předložce následuje sloveso, pak musí být v ING tvaru
She dreams of running - Sní o tom, že uteče
He said something about us being too loud - Říkal něco o tom, že moc hlučíme
in the night - v tomto spojení musí být člen, na rozdíl od at night
someday - zde by odpovídalo českému "někdy" myšlenému hodně do budoucna, jako svého druhu vize. Tím se odlišuje od dalších dvou "někdy", a to sometimes a sometime. SOMETIMES používáme jako frekvenční příslovce, tedy jak často něco děláme (how often do you help your mum? huh, just sometimes), kdežto SOMETIME znamená "někdy" v rámci určité doby (he'll come sometime in June - přijede někdy v červenci)
hold on - samotné "hold on" zde má význam "vydržet, nepodléhat, držet se"
you live for the fight... - zájmeno YOU je zde použito ve všeobecném významu "lidé / člověk" (člověk žije bojem, když je to to jediné, co má), stejně tak se v němčině využívá podmět man

to listen to me whine about... - 1) LISTEN se zde chová stejně jako tzv. slovesa smyslového vnímání (SEE, HEAR, FEEL..), za kterými následuje buď infinitiv slovesa bez -TO (jako v našem případě) nebo -ING tvar; 2) WHINE - kňučet, naříkat, stěžovat si na něco (pretty useful one)
all at once - obojí najednou, všechno najednou
fool - hlupák, "blázen" (bláhový člověk)
to the bone - děsně moc (what a translation!)
no doubt about it - o tom žádná, to bezpochyby
give sb. the creeps - děsit někoho (také "creep sb. out"), když je někdo CREEPY (nebo podst. jm. "a creep"), tak vás jeho chování znepokojuje až děsí, rozdíl mezi SCARY a CREEPY je ten, že SCARY vás vyloženě straší, když je něco CREEPY, tak jste z toho spíš znechuceni
play tricks on sb. - dělat na někoho boudu, šálit někoho
it keeps adding up - 1) opět zde upozorňuji na spojení KEEP + -ING tvar, 2) ADD UP - jednak "nabalovat se", "načítat se", ale taky "dávat smysl"
crack up - rozpadat se (také "fall apart")
stoned - zhulený
I went to a shrink to analyze... - 1) SHRINK - cvokař, 2) účelový infinitiv (zde TO ANALYZE - abych rozebral...) - supr věc, používá se ale pouze, pokud má věta jen jeden podmět!! Pokud tomu tak není, musíme použít spojení SO THAT (I went to a shrink so that he could analyze my dreams - dva podměty, v první větě "já", ve druhé "on"). Jak je patrno z příkladové věty, často se SO THAT používá ve spojení s modálními slovesy
lack of sth. - nedostatek něčeho; LACK se využívá i jako sloveso (he lacks experience - nemá dost zkušeností, chybí mu zkušenosti)
bring sb. down - srážet ke dnu (možná to zní v češtině blbě, lepší překlad mě bohužel nenapadá)
a bore - nudná situace, nudný člověk (it's such a bore - to je taková nuda!)
quit (doing) sth. - skončit, přestat s něčím
so I better hold on - 1) z HAD BETTER zbylo pouhé BETTER, viz někde výše, 2) HOLD ON - (ještě) vydržet, nevzdávat to

He tells me every day - 1) je rozdíl mezi TELL SB. STH. a SAY STH. TO SB.; 2) po TELL (podobně jako po OFFER, PROMISE apod.) se vynechává předmět IT (tell it to me, nebo ještě hůř tell me it)
Man, I really gotta lose my chick - 1) GOTTA = muset, viz výše; 2) LOSE = ztratit, nebo zde i "nechat (jít)", opakem by bylo HOLD ON TO SB. (hold on to her - té se nevzdávej); 3) CHICK = "kočka"
In the worst kind of a way - zde spíš poukáži jen z překladatelského hlediska na to, že ne vždy musíme slovo KIND, případně spojení KIND OF do češtiny překládat za využití slova DRUH (in the worst kind of a way - nejhůř, jak to vůbec jde; what kind of person was he? - co byl za člověka?)
sit on one's ass - unikátnost sezení na prdeli reflektuje i angličtina, ostatně slovíčko ASS je v hovorové angličtině značně považováno, viz https://www.eeyore.uh.cz/?p=19
he works his hands to the bone - jinými slovy "pracuje do mrtě"
to give her rmoney every payday - 1) účelový infinitiv s -TO (aby jí mohl dát peníze); 2) PAYDAY = den, kdy shrábnete výplatu
no way - (to teda) ani omylem
why don't you get a job? - WHY DON'T... je v podstatě nejlepší způsob vyjadřování návrhů, jak už zaznělo v gramatické sekci, nutno podotknout, že ve skutečné češtině mu ani tak neodpovídá doslovné "proč si nenajdeš práci?", ale spíše "co kdyby sis našel práci?"
I guess - v češtině jednoslovné "asi, nejspíš"
keep sb. at bay - držet si někoho od těla
taste - zde: vkus, jinak samozřejmě také "chuť"
it ain't easy doing nothing at all - 1) ohledně výrazu AIN'T (ve spisovné angličtině by zde bylo ISN'T) viz někde výše; 2) NOTHING AT ALL - vůbec nic
free ride - volno, pohodička, nicnedělání, "veget"
let me tell you - uvozovací LET ME moc nemáme ve zvyku používat, a to nejspíše proto, že na nás působí nadbytečně (v češtině řekneme pouze "řeknu vám" nebo "víte co, řeknu vám"), v angličtině se ovšem používá často a působí naprosto přirozeně

So no one told you life was gonna be this way - 1) v češtině bychom řekli "nikdo ti neřekl, že život je takový", v AJ zde však musí být minulý čas, kvůli slovesu TOLD v hlavní větě, které je právě v minulém čase; 2) pozornosti je hoden také obrat THIS WAY, víceméně zaměnitelný s LIKE THIS (don't act this way - nechovej se tak)
be broke - být švorc, úplně bez peněz

be stuck in second gear - pochází z automobilového prostředí. GEAR je něco jako rychlostní stupeň (čtvrtý - nebo třetí, podle možností - je nejrychlejší, ve druhém stupni tedy auto nejede na plný plyn, stejně jako člověk, který je takto "zaseklý")
it hasn't been your day, your week, your month or even your year - 1) předpřítomný čas, zde bychom ho nejspíše překládali přítomným časem, vyjadřuje, že od nějakého blíže neurčeného bodu v minulosti nám až do teď není nic moc; 2) even = dokonce i / ani
when the rain starts to pour - musí zde být přítomný čas, jelikož se jedná o časovou větu, i když chápu, že vás láká použít WILL, stejně jako u podmínkových vět
at ten - s časovými údaji ("hodinovými") se pojí zásadně předložka AT
so far... things are going great - 1) SO FAR jako české ZATÍM, používá se zejména v kladných větách, oproti známějšímu YET, které se využívá ve větách záporných (I've been there five times so far - byl jsem tam všehovšudy pětkrát; I haven't been there yet - zatím / ještě jsem tam nebyl) 2) zajímavé využití slova THINGS, které bychom zde nejspíš přeložili jako "všechno" (things are going great - všechno je úplně supr, things are changing all the time - pořád se všechno mění). Pěkná fráze na úvod přátelského rozhovoru je také "how are things?" tedy "jak je, jak se vede?"
your mother warned you there'd be days like these - 1) stažený tvar 'd zde zkracuje WOULD, zde je minulým časem od WILL. V ČJ řekneme "že budou takové dny", lákalo by nás to tedy použít "will". Zde je ale v hlavní větě sloveso WARN v minulém čase, WILL se tedy "posouvá" na WOULD; 2) LIKE THESE - viz výše

seems you're the only one who knows what it's like to be me - 1) sloveso SEEM = zdát se, vypadat na. Může se pojit buď s předmětem IT, podobně jako v češtině, nebo přímo s podmětem. Nenápadně doporučuji si navyknout zejména na druhou řečenou možnost (he seems to be unhappy - zdá se, že není moc šťastný); 2) klasická otázka by zněla "What is it like to be me?", zde je však začleněna do celé věty, jedná se tedy o tzv. otázku nepřímou, slovosled je tedy oznamovací - what it is like

insecurity - nejistota, fajn slovíčko, i když ještě užitečnější je příd.jm., a sice insecure, jakožto opak od confident
some who cross those lines and some that don't - 1) CROSS jako "překročit" (hranice); 2) velmi důležité je koncové DON'T, které nahrazuje ono "cross" (v češtině bychom jednoduše řekli "ti, kteří překračují hranice a ti, kteří ne". A právě tomuto "ne" odpovídají v angličtině pomocná slovesa, která podobným způsobem nahrazují významová slovesa).
Samozřejmě to platí i v kladných tvarech - "some that don't cross those lines and some that do"
Jen pro zajímavost k výrazu "ac-heads" na dalším řádku - jedná se o takové počítačové týpky, kteří jsou posedlí zejména elektronikou od Applu

Trochu složitější situace je se skládáním zkoušky, kde můžete použít slovesa DO, TAKE nebo SIT ("take" je z nich nejčastější, "sit" se v BrE ještě může pojit s předložkou "for")
and only time will tell if we'll ever... - zde vás možná překvapí přítomnost WILL po spojce IF, jelikož jste se mnohokrát učili, že "za IF (a WHEN) se WILL nedává". To je sice pravda, ale jen v podmínkových a časových větách. Zde ale žádná podmínka není, jedná se o větu předmětnou (ten čas řekne CO? Jestli to někdy zvládneme; ptáme se na předmět věty)
make it through - dát to, zvládnout to
seniors - "čtvrťáci" (studenti 4. ročníků SŠ / VŠ). V AmE se totiž každý rok na SŠ / VŠ nazývá jinak, a to:
- prvák = freshman
- druhák = sophomore
- třeťák = junior (year)

cannot wait for June - spojení CAN'T WAIT je výrazně podceňované, znamená samozřejmě "nemoci se dočkat, už se těšit apod."

Nevíme totiž, zda se jedná o muže či ženu. Patří sem podst.jm. typu CHILD, STUDENT, COLLEAGUE, PARTNER...
there's nothing to figure out - není nic, na co by člověk měl přijít. Vazba THERE IS je v podobných významech poměrně underused - nepodceňovat!!

some dreams of mine - některé moje sny; zde si všimněte tzv. dvojitého přivlastňovacího pádu of mine. Není to sice nějak extra častá záležitost, ale je dobré ji znát, protože ji můžete dobře využít právě tehdy, kdy chcete někomu přivlastnit podst.jm., které je něčím blíže určené (v tomto případě slůvkem "some"). Mnoho z vás by nejspíš řeklo "some my dreams", což je ale špatně, jelikož před podst.jm. se nemohou nacházet dva determinátory (= údaje, které podstatné jméno konkretizují) za sebou. Proto je potřeba využít právě přivlastňovacího pádu.
V této souvislosti ještě zmíním spojení A FRIEND OF MINE, tedy "jeden můj kamarád" (lepší verze než "one of my friends").
